SUGAR LAND, Texas -- The University of North Dakota men's golf team opened up the championship portion of its schedule at the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational on Monday and Tuesday from the Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.
The Fighting Hawks finished sixth as a team with 887 points, finishing just one point behind Houston Christian, and placing in the top half of the 14 competing teams. NoDak finished with two rounds under 300, including a 288 through the opening round to notch the second-best score of the round and the fourth-best score of the season for the team.
Senior
Grayson Wetch led the way on the individual side, matching his career-best finish in a tie for third with a 214 (+1). The score was just one stroke behind his career best over 54 holes and notches his second top-5 finish of his career. Wetch was at his best in the opening round, carding a career-low 67 (-4) thanks to five birdies before finishing the event with a 74 (+3) and 73 (+2) to sit just four strokes off the leader.
Nathan Peyerl was the other Hawk to finish in the top-20, sitting in a tie for 16th with a 220 (+7) for the event. The sophomore opened his account with a 71 (E) before a 75 (+4) and 74 (+3) rounded out his tournament. Fellow sophomore
Joseph Kortan finished just five shots back from his teammate with a 225 (+12) to pace tied for 33rd.
Lucas Feterl rounded out the scoring for NoDak with a 236 (+23) to sit tied for 66th while rookie
Carson Skarperud finished tied for 44th with a 228 (+15) while competing as an individual.
North Dakota will head to Boulder City, Nev. for the Jackrabbit Invitational beginning on Friday, Mar. 7.
