Two finish in top-10, UND claims third at WIU Intercollegiate

SILVIS, Ill. -- The University of North Dakota men's golf team wrapped up the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday at the WIU Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Illinois, from TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. 

North Dakota had a strong performance, finishing third among the nine competing teams with a team score of 896 (+44) to sit just one shot behind second place finisher Western Illinois and two strokes ahead of Northern Iowa in fourth. 

Individually, a pair of Fighting Hawks carded top-10 finishes led by freshman Carson Skarperud's best performance of his young career. The Grand Forks, N.D., native shot a career-low 219 (+6) to finish tied for fifth while also shooting an opening round 70 (-1) for his best 18-hole round of his collegiate career. 

Joseph Kortan also notched a top-10 finish for the green and white, sitting just one shot back of his teammate with a 220 (+7) to tie for seventh overall for his best finish and 54-hole score of the season. Grayson Wetch just missed a spot among the top-10, finishing tied for 11th with a 222 (+9) thanks to a pair of 73's over the first and final rounds of the event. 

Nathan Peyerl made it four Hawks among the top-20 on the leaderboard by placing 17th with a 225 (+12) while Kagan Kollar sat tied for 24th with a 230 (+17). Erik Stoxen (232, +19), Lucas Feterl (237, +24) and Zach Hinschberger (237, +24) rounded out the scoring for UND by placing tied for 30th and 41st, respectively. 

North Dakota will prepare for the Summit League Men's Golf Championships from Mesa, Ariz. beginning Apr. 27.
