BROOKINGS, S.D. – A broken school record and multiple top-five performances highlighted North Dakota track and field's performance at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational hosted by South Dakota State University.
The biggest headline of the day for the Fighting Hawks came during the men's 3000-meter run, where
Louis-Lys Fanucchi clocked a time of 7:58.50 to claim first place in the event. His new personal best now sits atop the UND record books, as he shattered the previous school record of 8:03.05.
Other event-winning performances include
Ilaria Villa, who won the exhibition discus throw with her mark of 157-8 (48.06m).
Haidyn Skeen (130-00, 39.63m) came fourth and
Cailey Moton (126-11, 38.69m) was fifth in the same event.
Julia Matthews also collected an individual crown when she won the women's shot put after a throw of 44-6 1/4 (13.57m).
In additional top-five finishes,
Marta Marksa ran an 8.69 in the 60-meter hurdles finals to finish as runner-up.
Cruz Megazzini ran a personal best of 49.34 in the men's 400-meter dash to lead a group of Hawks.
Josh Neil (49.42, fifth place),
Wyatt Grueneich and
Ryan Lange all also ran new PRs.
Aleksa Milanovic finished in third-place of the men's 800-meter run with his clocking of 1:52.49 while on the women's side of the event, Gabrielle Ruggeri ran a 2:13.09 for fifth place.
Frida Giersdorff claimed fifth place in the women's 3000-meter run with her team-leading time of 9:46.35.
In the women's high jump,
Anya Williams cleared a height of 5-5 (1.65m) for runner-up, just 1/4 off her previous personal best, as
Ava Phrakonkham came fifth with a mark of 5-1 (1.55m).
Tyler Thoreson took fifth overall in the men's shot put off of his throw of 51-1 1/2 (15.58m) while over in the weight throw,
Carter Byron (57-4 1/4, 17.48m) came fourth and
Boaz Raderschadt (56-00 1/2, 17.08m) was fifth.
Matthews added in another top-three finish with her third-place showing in the women's weight throw, where she threw a 63-4 3/4 (19.32m) for a new personal best.
North Dakota track and field returns to Grand Forks for its indoor home opener on January 30 and 31 as the Fighting Hawks host the UND Open inside the Frederick D. Pollard Jr. Athletic Center.
