GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Back-to-back! Junior blueliner
Abram Wiebe was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week for the second straight time after another multi-point weekend, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Wiebe earned his second straight weekly honor after a stellar performance on the backend for No. 3 North Dakota in a sweep over No. 20 Miami. In Friday's 1-0 win, Wiebe helped NoDak hold Miami to just 12 shots on goal before shining on the offensive side in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Wiebe started the rally with a highlight-reel pass to make it a 3-2 game, before scoring his first career overtime game-winner to complete the comeback and earn the game's first star honors.
The Mission, British Columbia, native finished the series with two points on a game-winning goal and primary assist. He also blocked three shots by the RedHawks, posted a +1 plus/minus and put three shots on goal over the weekend. Wiebe is now tied for fifth among NCHC defensemen with 21 points (4g/17a) on the season, including seven points in his last six games.
No. 3 North Dakota closes out the home portion of its regular season schedule this weekend against St. Cloud State beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. on Midco Sports, NCHC.tv, TSN2 and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
