Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Friday afternoon's neutral site women's tennis match between North Dakota and South Dakota came down to the wire inside Huether Family Match Pointe, but it was freshman
Emma Roberts who put on an electric showing to clinch the 4-3 conference victory for the Fighting Hawks.
The win improves UND's record to 12-7 overall with a 3-0 conference showing and mark the team's ninth straight win.
Competition began in favor of UND, who took the first two doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead. The duo of
Alva Norberg and
Andrea Pineda locked in a 6-3 win from the middle position before Roberts and
Alyssa Giupponi added in another 6-3 win for the visitors from the bottom court. Now ahead 1-0 on the scoreboard, the match at the top spot went unfinished for
Ethel Li and
Jule Schulte at 4-4.
The momentum for North Dakota continued into singles play as Li collected a quick 6-3, 6-1 win from the No. 1 court in dominating fashion. Norberg then took home a flipped 6-1, 6-3 win at the fourth court to put the Fighting Hawks ahead 3-0.
But then the Coyotes rallied back.
South Dakota rattled off the next three wins to tie up the score at 3-3, backed by a 6-3, 6-3 win from the third court, a gritty 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position and a 6-4, 6-2 win from the No. 2 spot.
All eyes then turned down to the No. 6 court, which ended up going three sets in an absolute nail-biter. UND freshman Roberts took the first set 6-4 before faltering in the second set, 4-6. But the New Zealand-native would not be deterred as she took complete control for a 6-0 third set win to clinch the 4-3 team victory.
The North Dakota women return home for another conference contest as they take on Omaha inside Choice Health & Fitness on Saturday, April 4 with action beginning at 12:30 p.m.
