GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Junior defenseman
Abram Wiebe earned yet another accolade on Thursday afternoon, as he earned the nation's top defenseman honors for the month of February by the Hockey Commissioner's Association.
He is the second Fighting Hawk to earn the honor this season, joining
Jake Livanavage from December.
Wiebe paced all NCHC skaters and all NCAA defensemen with 11 points during the month, potting two goals and dishing out nine assists over the eight games. The Mission, British Columbia, native helped North Dakota going 6-2-1 with no regulation losses during February and captured the Penrose Cup as NCHC regular season champions on the penultimate day of the month.
He had points in six of the eight games, including four multi-point games and a career-best three assist night in a win at Minnesota Duluth. Wiebe finished with 10 blocked shots and was a plus-6 rating while becoming only the second blueliner in league history to win three straight NCHC Defenseman of the Week honors and capturing NCHC Defenseman of the Month honors.
North Dakota opens the NCHC Frozen Faceoff as the No. 1 seed and will battle No. 8 seed Omaha in the quarterfinals beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. (CT) from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
