GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota men's basketball Head Coach
Paul Sather announced the addition of guard Tyler Wagner on Monday.
Wagner joins North Dakota after spending his freshman season with Austin Peay. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"Tyler is a big wing that can really score the basketball," said Sather. "He has range well beyond the arc along with great size to score around the basket. He's a weapon no matter where he is on the floor. Tyler has won state championships in high school and is ready to make an impact at the division l level. Tyler is a great fit at UND and we can't wait to get him on campus and get the work started."
A native of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Wagner averaged 2.6 points and 1.2 rebounds per game on 41.7% from the field and 38.6% from deep across 23 games in 7.1 minutes per game with Austin Peay this past season. His 38.6% from 3-point range ranked third on the Governors, connecting on 17-of-44 attempts.
The 6-foot-5 guard scored in double figures three times this season, posting a career-high 20 points on Feb. 28 at Bellarmine on 7-of-11 from the field and 6-for-10 from behind the arc. He did that in 25 minutes while grabbing five rebounds.
The guard displayed the ability to shoot the ball at a high level, connecting on three or more 3-pointers in four different games, going 4-for-9 from deep in his collegiate debut on Nov. 3 against Bryan. 17 of his 20 made field goals on the season came from three-point range.
Wagner brings a resume of winning to UND, being a part of an Austin Peay team who went 15-3 in ASUN conference play. Prior to his stint with the Governors, he won three-straight Class AAA State Championships in Minnesota at Totino Grace High School in his freshman through junior seasons.
The Minnesota native transferred to Champlin Park High School for his senior year where he averaged 27.7 points per game, scoring a school record 60 points on Feb. 5 in a win over Blaine. Wagner led Champlin Park to the Section 5AAAA championship game.
Wagner was rated a 3-star prospect out of high school and was ranked the No. 7 player in the state of Minnesota Class of 2025 according to 247Sports. He was ranked the 429th player nationally in the transfer portal according to On3.
He has ties to UND, as his mother, Jen, played basketball at North Dakota and won two NCAA National Championships. His father, Brad, played football at NoDak, where he was a safety for the Hawks in the 1990s.
