GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota track and field head coach
Jim Vahrenkamp was named the Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year as 16 Fighting Hawks earned All-Summit League honors across the men's and women's squads, league officials announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Vahrenkamp collected his first career Women's Coach of the Year honor after leading the Fighting Hawks to a second-place finish at the conference championships with 196 points. It marked the best finish at the Summit League Outdoor meet in program history for North Dakota as UND swept the Track and Field MVP honors for a second year in a row. The women garnered six first-place finishes and eclipsed 13 All-League honorees over the course of the three-day meet.
The individual conference honors for UND came as 16 athletes finished in the top-three in an event category at the league championship meet, totaling 22 All-Summit recognitions between the men's and women's teams.
13 Fighting Hawks on the women's side of the competition were named All-Summit, led by
Jadyn Keeler, who collected honors in four different events. She took home a triple crown of gold medals after winning the 10,000-meter run (35:03.58), 5000-meter run (16:22.84) and 3000-meter steeplechase (10:00.45, school record). The senior also claimed silver in the 1500-meter run and scored a total of 38 points for North Dakota at the meet, which in turn gave her the title of Women's Track MVP of the Championship.
Justina Esangbedo was also named Women's Field MVP of the Championship after scoring in four different events and claiming All-Summit honors in the discus throw. She finished third overall in the event to earn a spot on the podium after her throw of 154-1 (46.98m).
In the women's 800-meter run,
Brooklyn Brouse booked her ticket to the event finals and finished third overall with her clocking of 2:12.42 for a bronze medal.
Olivia Correale took the title of Summit League Champion in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:26.49 to edge out her own teammate for the top spot on the podium and the gold medal.
A runner-up finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase was all
Frida Giersdorff needed to earn her All-Summit League honors. She crossed the finish line in 10:27.38 to claim the silver medal and finish only behind her teammate, Keeler.
With two top-three finishes,
Shewaye Johnson is a double All-Summit honoree. She first claimed runner-up in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 35:16.71—which broke the meet and facility record—before adding in another runner-up finish in the 5000-meter run in 16:22.84 to secure a pair of silver medals.
Also earning a podium appearance in the 10,000-meter run was
Marie-Louise Jorgensen, who clocked a time of 36:04.25 to clinch third place and the bronze medal.
Eucabeth Kivikangas scored a personal-best 5085 points in the heptathlon to take second place overall with the silver medal after placing in the top-three in each of the seven combined events.
A Fighting Hawk duo put on quite the show in the long jump off the performances of
Tiffanie Magnusson and
Marta Marksa. They each earned bids to the event finals that saw Magnusson win with a leap of 20-1 (6.12m) as Marksa took third with a 19-6 1/4 (5.95m).
Success continued for North Dakota in further field events, like in the hammer throw.
Julia Matthews tossed a throw of 187-5 (57.14m) to secure a spot on the podium and the bronze medal after finishing third overall.
Another Summit League crown came in the discus throw as
Ilaria Villa emerged victoriously with her mark of 164-7 (50.18m) to take the gold.
Anya Williams rounded out the all-conference finishes for the Fighting Hawks in the high jump where she cleared a height of 5-5 3/4 (1.67m) to claim the silver medal and the second-place finish.
Three athletes on the men's team also collected All-Summit recognitions for a total of five.
Louis-Lys Fanucchi grabbed a pair of honors after he took second in the 1500-meter run in a time of 3:59.96 and grabbed runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a clocking of 9:14.29. His performances resulted in a Men's Track MVP of the Championship honor after scoring 21 points, repeating the same accolade he earned during the indoor season.
Shane Zierden also doubled up his conference honors after winning the men's long jump with a school record mark of 25-2 (7.67m) and taking third in the triple jump with a leap of 48-7 1/2 (14.82m).
Josh Neil rounded out the men's honors with his all-conference showing in the 400-meter hurdles, earning a big to the event finals and crossing the finish line in a personal-best 52.27 seconds for third place, the bronze medal and the UND school record.
