OXBOW, N.D. -- The North Dakota women's golf team opened the 2026-27 season with a strong showing on Tuesday, sitting in second place after the first round of the NDSU Invitational at Oxbow Country Club. The Fighting Hawks carded a team score of 304 and trail only host North Dakota State (299) entering Tuesday's final round.

Leading the way for UND was sophomore Sophie Cook, who fired an even-par 72 and sits third overall after 18 holes. Cook's round was fueled by four birdies, tying for the tournament lead in the opening round.

Freshman Payton Stocker posted a 76 and is tied for seventh, while senior Gigi Lund and fellow rookie Ella Speidel each carded 78s to share ninth place. Junior Annika Jyrkas rounded out the team scoring with a 79 and is tied for 13th heading into the final day. Junior Mallory Uselman finished just outside the counting scores with an 81 and sits tied for 19th.

As a team, North Dakota paced the tournament field in several key statistical categories, leading all teams in par-3 scoring average (3.08), par-4 scoring average (4.32) and total birdies (13) through the opening round.

UND also received solid performances from four individuals competing outside the team lineup. Junior Jaya Grube leads that group in 23rd place after posting an 84, while sophomore Kate McComb and senior Lindsay Astrup are tied for 25th with matching rounds of 86. Junior Maddy Trapnell sits 27th after shooting an 88 in Tuesday's opening round.

The final round of the NDSU Invitational is scheduled to begin Wednesday morning at 9:10 a.m. from Oxbow Country Club as the Fighting Hawks look to chase down the tournament title in the season-opening event.
