Johnson excelled in several sports during her time at UND, capping it all off be receiving the Grace Rhonemus Award in 1973 as the school's top female athlete for that year. A four-year letterwinner as a guard in basketball and 1973 Most Valuable Player, Johnson also lettered twice in field hockey and volleyball as an outside hitter and earned one letter in softball as shortstop. She also served as graduate assistant and assistant coach of women's basketball for one year. Johnson graduated from UND in 1973 with a degree in Health/Physical Education, and received her master's degree from UND in Health/Physical Education in 1976.
