MADISON, Wis. ? Wisconsin senior Jake Dowell scored the only goal of the game at 12:24 of the third period to give the host Badgers a 1-0 win over the UND men's hockey team on Saturday.
The goal came when Dowell found a loose puck in the crease after a scramble in front of the UND net, and chipped it in past Sioux goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.).
The loss was the first of the year for the Sioux, who fell to 3-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WCHA. By beating the Sioux, Wisconsin gained a split of the season series and raised its record to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the WCHA.
For the second night in a row, the teams played to a scoreless first period. The second period was also scoreless, but UND had the best scoring chance.
UND's T.J. Oshie (So., Warroad, Minn.) flipped a shot from in close at the left side of the goal that beat Wisconsin goalie Brian Elliott over the left shoulder. The goal light went on, but after officials reviewed the replay, the goal was disallowed. Replays clearly showed the puck hit the cross bar but never crossed the goal line.
The Sioux held Wisconsin to just three shots on goal in the first period and six in the second. UND outshot the Badgers, 27-19, for the game. Both teams were 0-3 on the power play.
UND will return home to face Maine next weekend in a Friday-Saturday series.
NOTES: The last time North Dakota was shut out was Dec. 29, 2005, when Harvard beat the Sioux, 1-0, in Grand Forks. Saturday's game was also the first time UND was involved in a game that was scoreless after two periods since that same contest against Harvard.
