GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Jonathan Toews (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored his first career hat trick and added an assist to cap a four-point night and lead the sixth-ranked UND men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over visiting Quinnipiac on Saturday.
The win gave UND a series sweep of its season-opening series. UND is 2-0-0, while Quinnipiac fell to 0-2-0.
The four-point game was the first of Toews' career. Toews' linemates, T.J. Oshie (So., Warroad, Minn.) and Ryan Duncan (So., Calgary, Alberta) each had three-point nights. Duncan had a goal and two assists and Oshie had three assists.
UND took a 1-0 lead at 6:37 of the first on Toews' first goal of the season. Toews took a pass from Duncan and made a move around a Quinnipiac defenseman before beating Bobcats goalie Bud Fisher on a backhander.
Just under five minutes later, Duncan beat Fisher on a high wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-0 UND at 11:28 of the first. It was Duncan's first goal of the season.
Toews got his second goal at 1:04 of the third when he knocked in a loose puck in the crease after Fisher had stopped an Oshie shot.
Toews completed his hat trick at 14:12 of the third period when he beat Fisher high to his stick side.
Quinnipiac's goals were scored by Jordan Zitoun and Brandon Wong.
UND outshot Quinnipiac 37-19 for the game. Sioux goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) won his second game in a row.
The Sioux will continue their season next weekend with a Friday-Saturday series at Wisconsin.
