HANOVER, N.H. -- UND forward Ryan Duncan's power play goal with 10:27 to play broke a 2-2 tie, and Duncan later added an empty net insurance goal to lift the Fighting Sioux men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday.
North Dakota's win came in the championship game of Dartmouth College's Ledyard National Bank Tournament. The Sioux raised their season record to 9-10-1, while St. Lawrence fell to 9-9-1 overall.
Duncan, a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, was named the tournament MVP for his efforts after scoring three goals and picking up an assist in two games. He had eight shots on goal in the championship game. Joining Duncan on the all-tournament team from UND were forward T.J. Oshie (So., Warroad, Minn.), defenseman Robbie Bina (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.).
UND led 2-1 after two periods but St. Lawrence tied it, 2-2, 3:24 into the third period when Kevin DeVergilio scored his second power play goal of the night.
Duncan broke the tie with the Sioux on a 5-on-3. After exchanging passes with Chay Genoway (Fr., Swan River, Manitoba), Duncan skated from the right circle and into the slot, where he unleashed a wrist shot that found the upper corner over St. Lawrence goalie Alex Petizian's left shoulder.
Duncan's empty net goal, his 14th of the season, came with 34 seconds remaining.
UND dominated the early going, holding St. Lawrence without a shot on goal for over 10 minutes at the start of the game, but the Saints opened the scoring with a power play goal by DeVergilio at 12:07.
UND tied it 1-1 with a power play goal of its own at 14:18. Sioux defenseman Scott Foyt (Sr., Andover, Minn.) banked a shot off the boards behind the St. Lawrence net, and Chris Porter (Sr., Thunder Bay, Ontario) deflected the puck out to UND forward Ryan Martens (So., Selkirk, Manitoba) at the left of the cage. Martens knocked it in over Petizian for his second goal of the season.
St. Lawrence had an excellent scoring chance with 15 seconds left in the period while on the power play, but Lamoureux made a great glove save from about 10 feet on Saints forward Max Taylor, who was breaking down the left side all alone.
UND scored the only goal of the second period when Foyt beat Petizian at 5:58 with a shot from the right point. It was Foyt's first career goal and gave him the first multi-point game of his career.
The Sioux outshot St. Lawrence 32-20 for the game. Lamoureux made 18 saves.
Both of St. Lawrence's goals were power play goals. The Saints were 2-of-5 on the power play, while UND was 2-of-6.
UND will resume WCHA play next weekend when it travels to Colorado College for a Friday-Saturday series.
NOTE: In addition to the four Sioux players, the all-tournament team included St. Lawrence forwards Kevin DeVergilio and Brock McBride and Boston University defenseman Matt Gilroy.
