UND men's hockey overcomes two-goal deficit, beats No. 1-ranked Gophers 5-3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The UND men's hockey team fell behind 2-0 to top-ranked Minnesota in the first period, but the Fighting Sioux came back with five consecutive goals and beat the Gophers 5-3 before a sellout crowd of 10,197 on Friday.

UND forward Jonathan Toews (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) had a goal and two assists, and Sioux forward Ryan Duncan (So., Calgary, Alberta) had two goals and one assist.

The win raised North Dakota's overall record to 14-11-2 and WCHA record to 8-9-2. Minnesota fell to 21-4-3 overall and 13-3-3 in the WCHA.

The Gophers jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 2-1 after a penalty-filled first period in which Minnesota had five power play opportunities and outshot UND 15-7.

Minnesota opened the scoring with a power play goal by Ryan Stoa at 2:03 of the first period. Stoa fired a shot that found its way through traffic from right out in front of Sioux goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.).

The Gophers then made it 2-0 when Alex Goligoski scored on a wrist shot from the slot during a delayed penalty call.

UND cut the Minnesota lead to 2-1 on a shorthanded goal by Robbie Bina (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.), who took a pass from Toews and fired a wrist shot past Gophers goalie Kellen Briggs for his seventh goal of the season.

The Fighting Sioux tied it 7:08 into the second period. UND's Rylan Kaip (Jr., Radville, Saskatchewan) won a faceoff to Briggs' left and went straight in and fired a shot that Briggs stopped, but Erik Fabian (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) banged in a rebound from the edge of the crease. It was Fabian's third goal in his last six games and fourth goal in seven career games against Minnesota.

The Sioux grabbed a 3-2 lead at 9:25 after applying heavy pressure in the Gophers' end. Toews batted in a rebound of a Chay Genoway (Fr., Swan River, Manitoba) shot for his seventh goal of the season. Toews' goal also was the eventual game winner.

UND raised its lead to 4-2 with 10 seconds remaining in the second, when Duncan banged in a rebound with the Sioux on the power play. It was Duncan's 18th goal of the season and WCHA-leading 10th power play goal of the season. Toews and Taylor Chorney (So., Hastings, Minn.) assisted on the goal.

The Sioux killed off three Minnesota power plays in the first 10 minutes of the third period and made the score 5-2 when Duncan stole the puck from a Gopher defenseman and fired a shot past Briggs at 17:25.

The Gophers' Justin Bostrom scored a power play goal at 18:42 of the third, and Minnesota pulled Briggs for an extra skater in the final minute, but UND held on for the win.

Minnesota outshot the Sioux 38-27, but Lamoureux 35 saves, including 16 saves on the power play. Minnesota was 2-of-11 on the power play, while UND went 1-of-5 on the power play.
