Denver tips UND men's hockey 4-3 in overtime

DENVER, Colo. -- Denver's J.D. Corbin deflected in a shot 2:18 into overtime to lift the host Pioneers to a 4-3 win over North Dakota on Friday.

Corbin, who had missed the last 30 games with an injury, deflected Adrian Veideman's shot from the right point after Mike Handza won a faceoff from the right circle and directed the puck back to Veideman.

The win capped a comeback by the Pioneers, who trailed 1-0 early and 3-2 after two periods.

The loss snapped UND's 11-game unbeaten streak (8-0-3), and allowed Denver (21-11-3 overall, 13-9-3) to stay in third place in the WCHA and move three points ahead of the Sioux in the league standings.

North Dakota is now 17-12-4 overall and 11-10-4 in the WCHA and remains tied for fourth in the league with Colorado  College, which lost 3-2 at Minnesota State on Friday.

The Pioneers outshot the Sioux, 42-23, in the game. Sioux goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) played an outstanding game in net, making 38 saves, including several spectacular stops.

UND took a 1-0 lead at 17:41 of the first period on a goal by T.J. Oshie (So., Warroad, Minn.). Oshie one-timed a shot from the right of Denver goalie Glenn Fisher after taking a pass from Ryan Duncan (So., Calgary, Alberta). It was Oshie's 11th goal of the season. Sioux forward Jonathan Toews (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) also picked up an assist on the goal.

Denver tied it with 41.1 seconds remaining in the period on Ryan Dingle's 20th goal of the season. Dingle's goal came on a backhand shot that beat Lamoureux up high.

The Pioneers outshot the Sioux 14-8 in the first period.

Denver took a 2-1 lead at 6:57 of the second period when freshman Tyler Ruegsegger knocked in a rebound of a Dingle shot during a Pioneers' 3-on-1 break.

UND tied it 2-2 at 12:52 of the second on a power play goal by Duncan, who scored on a pass from Oshie, who was in a prone position on the ice when he made the pass. It was Duncan's WCHA-leading 25th goal of the season.

Just over three minutes later at 16:14, Duncan made it 3-2 for UND when he broke up a Denver break in the neutral zone, carried in and exchanged passes with Oshie before sending a pass to Toews, who buried a shot from the edge of the crease. It was Toews' 12th goal of the season.

The Pioneers tied it 3-3 at 2:18 of the third period when Tom May beat the Sioux defense down the right side and slid a pass to Geoff Paukovich, who tapped it in from the left side of the goal.

Denver made a bid to take a lead in the next three minutes, but Lamoureux made two outstanding saves, first stopping Dingle on a 3-on-1 and then denying Ryan Helgason on a breakaway.

Oshie had a chance to give the Sioux the lead with 2:36 to play in the third period, but his wrist shot hit the left post. Referee Todd Anderson reviewed a replay of the shot and ruled no goal.

NOTES: Tonight's game was the second this season in which Duncan, Toews and Oshie each scored a goal. The first time the trio all scored in the same game was on Feb. 9 in an 8-4 win over MInnesota State. Attendance at the game was a sellout crowd of 6,117.
