UND busts out brooms against Mansfield in doubleheader sweep

CAPE CORAL, FL -- The Fighting Sioux baseball team busted out their broomsticks as they swept Mansfield University by scores of 8-6 and 19-10. UND improves its season record to 2-1 and Mansfield falls to 1-5.

Game 1 - North Dakota 8 and Mansfield 6

In the first game of the double-dip, UND's offense found is groove by scoring eight runs. Mansfield starting pitcher Tyler Noel gave up eight hits to the UND offense. UND's starting pitcher Rob Bird Horse pitched 4 2/3 strong innings by allowing only five runs, four of which were earned.

Junior Chris Gulsvig had a monster day by slamming two homeruns and driving in three runs. Seniors Mike Lundeen and Bo Stanley smoked a homerun apiece to help power the UND offense. Gulsvig's homeruns were his first and second of the season and Lundeen's and Stanley's homeruns were their first of the season.

Freshmen Sam Kinne got the win for his 1/3 of inning of relief work in which he retired the only two batters that he faced. Senior Jason Fuller got his first save of the season by pitching two innings of relief work. Fuller struck out one Mansfield hitter and walked three.

Game 2 - North Dakota 19 and Mansfield 10

In the second game of the doubleheader, UND's offense exploded for 19 runs against the Mansfield Mountaineers. Mansfield's offense didn't hold anything back either as it was able to score 10 runs. North Dakota's offense had five different players finish with at least two hits.

Tyler Frenzel and Anthony Brenner provided the offensive power as each player hit a homerun. Frenzel finished the day 2-3 with two RBI's and Brenner finished 1-2 with four RBI's.

Senior centerfield Mike Lundeen finished with two hits and and two RBI's and junior rightfielder Chris Gulsvig had another monster game as he went 2-3 with two doubles and four RBI's.

Freshmen Andrew Gudmunson had a big day at the plate with two hits and one RBI for the game.

Senior pitcher Lucas Sandman earned the win with four innings of work while striking out five and walking four. The victory is Sandman's first of the season. Freshman Sam Kinne came in and pitched three innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

Sam Kinne earned his first collegiate victory and first collegiate save in the doubleheader.

UND returns to action tomorrow afternoon against the University of Charleston in Fort Myers, Florida. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (EST) and will be played at Terry Park #3.
