MANKATO, Minn. -- The Fighting Sioux baseball was swept in a doubleheader against 16th-ranked Minnesota State by scores of 4-0 and 8-0. North Dakota is now 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the NCC. Minnesota State improves to 24-4 and 5-0 in the NCC.
Game 1 - # 16 Minnesota State - 4 North Dakota - 0
Junior pitcher Sean Cooley pitched five shutout innings before giving up four runs in the fifth inning. Cooley pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and striking out one and walking one. Three of the four runs were earned. Cooley falls to 1-3 on the year.
At the plate, the Sioux knocked out seven hits but couldn't string the hits together. Junior catcher, Scott Schmidt went 3-3 with a double and a triple. Tyler Frenzel, Nate Meissner, Chris Gulsvig and Andrew Gudmunson added a hit apiece in the game. With his three hits, Schmidt has a six-game hitting streak going. North Dakota left six runners on base in the loss.
Game 2 - #16 Minnesota State - 8 North Dakota - 0
The Fighting Sioux stranded 12 runners in the second game on six hits and six walks. North Dakota loaded the bases in the third and fifth innings, but couldn't come up with a hit to score any runs.
Junior pitcher Rob Bird Horse pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out one and walking one. With the loss, Bird Horse falls to 2-2 on the year.
Nate Meissner, Chris Gulsvig, Mike Lundeen, Anthony Brenner, Tim Burns and Tyler Merkel each had one hit in the loss.
The Sioux and the Mavericks will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. at the MSU Baseball Complex in Mankato, Minn.
