DULUTH, Minn. -- The Fighting Sioux baseball team split with Minnesota-Duluth by scores of 21-9 and 2-14. With the split, UND now has a record of 12-13 overall and 3-7 in the NCC. Minnesota-Duluth is now 13-26 overall and 3-8 in the NCC.
Game 1 - North Dakota - 21 Minnesota-Duluth - 9
Every starter and reserve for the Fighting Sioux reached base in the 21-9 rout of the Bulldogs. The Fighting Sioux offense pounded out a season-high 21 runs on 19 hits, one hit shy of tying the season high for hits in a game.
Tim Burns, Andrew Gudmunson, and Anthony Brenner each hit homeruns in the game. Gudmunson's homerun was a solo shot in the third inning, Burns hit his homerun three batters later and plated two RBIs, and Brenner's bomb was of the three-run variety in the fourth inning. Brenner, Gudmunson, and Burns each finished with two hits. Burns knocked in three runs and Brenner plated four runs.
Leading the way for the Sioux offense was freshman catcher Ryne Jungling. Jungling went 4-5 with four runs and two RBIs. Senior Nate Meissner went 3-5 with three runs and a double and senior Tyler Frenzel was 2-5 with four RBIs and a double.
Sophomore Mike Lueck picked up the victory for the Sioux. Lueck pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven while walking four. Lueck has a record of 2-4 on the season.
Game 2 - Minnesota-Duluth - 14 North Dakota - 2
In game two, the Fighting Sioux bats only managed seven hits and two runs but the Minnesota-Duluth offense slugged out 18 hits and 14 runs to earn the split.
Lucas Sandman pitched 2 1/3 innings and was saddled with the loss. Sandman is now 1-2 on the year.
Tyler Frenzel and Ryne Jungling each finished with two hits in the game. Bo Stanley, Nate Meissner, and Tim Burns each had a hit.
UND returns to action on Tuesday against Bemidji State in Grand Forks. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. with the games being played at Kraft Field. The Sioux have defeated the Beavers once this season by the score of 12-2.
