GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux baseball got a split in the doubleheader after Anthony Brenner hit a walk-off grand slam to propel the Sioux to the 5-1 victory in game one. Nebraska-Omaha would take game two with a 22-14 victory. With the doubleheader split the Sioux have a season record of 15-16 overall and 4-10 in the NCC. Nebraska-Omaha now has a season record of 29-17 overall and 13-3.
Game 1 - North Dakota - 5 Nebraska-Omaha - 1
Freshman Anthony Brenner sealed the game one victory for North Dakota with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Nebraska-Omaha scored their only run in the second inning on a hit from Brian Goliber.
North Dakota's offense was scoreless for six innings, but in the seventh inning the Sioux offense came through when it mattered most. Things started slowly as the first two hitters got out. Down to their last out; Bo Stanley and Tyler Frenzel hit back-to-back singles. Junior Scott Schmidt then singled through the right side of the infield to score Frenzel and tie the game at 1-1. Nate Meissner then coaxed a walk from UNO closer Shawn Smith. Anthony Brenner then took the 1-2 pitch from Smith and deposited it over the scoreboard in left-centerfield for a walk-off grand slam.
Tyler Frenzel, Nate Meissner and Anthony Brenner rapped out two hits apiece in the contest. Brenner had four RBIs in the contest and hit is fourth homerun of the season. Scott Schmidt, Mike Lundeen and Bo Stanley each had a hit in the game.
Sophomore Michael Lueck pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out eight and walking two. With the victory, Lueck runs his season record to 3-4.
Game 2 - Nebraska Omaha - 22 North Dakota - 14
Offense was the name of the game in the second game as Nebraska-Omaha scored 22 runs on 20 hits. The Mavericks hit nine homeruns in the second game. North Dakota's offense rapped out 16 hits and scored 14 runs with two homeruns on the contest.
North Dakota scored at least two runs in every inning but the third inning, when the Sioux didn't score.
Seniors Nate Meissner and Mike Lundeen led the UND offense with three hits each. Meissner drove in two and Lundeen drove in one run. Scott Schmidt, Ryne Jungling, and Andrew Gudmunson each knocked out two hits. Ryne Jungling drove in four runs and hit his first homerun of the season. Joe Niehoff, Tyler Merkel, Josh Nelson, and Bo Stanley each had one hit apiece in the contest. Stanley's hit was a homerun and was his second homerun of the season.
North Dakota returns to action on Tuesday against Mary. The games will be played at Kraft Field in Grand Forks and will start at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
