GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux baseball team routed Mary by the score of 19-7. North Dakota gets back to .500, with a record of 16-16 on the season while Mary falls to 15-19 on the year.
On Senior Day, it was all about the Fighting Sioux baseball seniors. Senior Lucas Sandman picked up the victory, his second of the season. Seniors Nate Meissner and Tyler Frenzel each hit a homerun in the game. Junior Bo Stanley, who is graduating this year, also played his final home game and hit a homerun in the contest. Fellow seniors Mike Lundeen and Tim Burns each added a hit to the Sioux offense.
UND started the scoring early as freshman Anthony Brenner drove in Bo Stanley with a single to right center. Andrew Gudmunson followed up Brenner's single with a long three-run homerun to left field.
In the fourth inning, Stanley hit a three-run homerun to left-center that scored Ryne Jungling and Tyler Frenzel. Four batters later, Chris Gulsvig hit a two-run homerun to left field for UND's second homerun of the inning.
Frenzel capped the sixth inning scoring off with a three-run homerun to left-center, his second homerun of the year. In the eighth inning, Meissner got the scoring started with a homerun to left-center, his third of the year and UND's fifth and final homerun of the game.
For the game, the Sioux offense produced 19 runs on 18 hits and five homeruns.
Starting pitcher Lucas Sandman pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits while striking out seven. Sandman has a season record of 2-2. Junior Casey Bovkoon relieved Sandman and pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bovkoon struck out three and walked one. Fellow junior Sean Cooley pitched one inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
North Dakota will play St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday in Cold Spring, Minn. at Springer Park. Friday's doubleheader will be played at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will be played at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. This is North Dakota's final regular season series before the NCC tournament.
