UND?s Donovan Alexander selected in third round of CFL draft

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--University of North Dakota junior defensive back Donovan Alexander was chosen in the third round, 23rd overall, by the Montreal Alouettes in today's 2007 Canadian Football League Canadian Draft.

A two-year starter at right cornerback for UND, Alexander was named to the 2006 All-North Central Conference second team after starting all 13 games for UND's NCC championship team. He ranked second on the team with personal highs in tackles (68), solo tackles (54) and pass breakups (11). He also recorded his fourth career interception and recorded one tackle for a loss in helping lead UND to the NCAA quarterfinal round, its fourth consecutive berth in the NCAA postseason.

Alexander, a native of Winnipeg, Man., has appeared in 40 career games at UND, including 26 career starts, and has made 119 career tackles (88 solo) with four interceptions and 23 pass breakups. His 23 pass breakups rank seventh all-time at UND.

Alexander and the Fighting Sioux went 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the NCC in 2006 and captured their second straight conference championship.

Alexander is the first Fighting Sioux to be selected in the CFL draft since defensive lineman Scott Schultz (1997-2000) was taken first overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2001. More than 40 former Fighting Sioux have gone on to sign professional contracts in the CFL, including 1990 CFL Hall of Fame inductee Dave Fennell, a defensive lineman who lettered at UND from 1971-73.
