Freund, UND rout Lumberjacks

GRAND FORKS -- Danny Freund had only thrown a handfull of passes in his UND career before tonight. It sure didn't look that way.

Freund was on the mark, completed 15-of-18 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns, all of which came in the first half.

Freund and the rest of the Fighting Sioux dominated Humboldt State tonight, beating the Lumberjacks 59-0 at the Alerus Center.

Freund connected with Tory Ott for a seven-yard touchdown, Alex Nicholas from 55, Brady Trenbeath from 28 and Ryan Chappell from 13 and 25, as the Sioux took a 38-0 lead at half.

Even the backup quarterbacks got into the action. Jake Landry connected with Trenbeath for a three-yard touchdown at the 11:34 mark of the third quarter. Later in the fourth quarter, Ryan Konrath hit Kenley Wahlin to put the Sioux up 59-0.

The Sioux defense, meanwhile, kept the Lumberjack quarterbacks and wide receivers under control. UND held Humboldt State to 7-of-21 for 65 total pass yards and two interceptions.

The defense also got into the scoring action. Kris Ankenbauer picked up a fumble, sped down the right side of the field and scored a 65-yard return touchdown with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Humboldt State running back Cornell Candidate ended with 108 yards on 18 carries.

For the Sioux, Chappell ended with 47 rushing yards on eight carries, and three receptions for 51 yards and the two scores. Running back Brandon Brady also had 46 yards on nine carries.

Wide receiver Weston Dressler ended with 97 yards and five receptions.

The Fighting Sioux will return to action on Sept. 7 at Southern Utah.

Notes: Dressler moved past Jesse Smith (1999-02) and into second place on UND's career receiving yards list with 2,203. Only Ron Gustafson (1971-74), with 2,281, has more receiving yards in Sioux history ... Chappell's receiving touchdowns were the first of his career ... Freund completed his first eight passes.
