GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team slayed the Dragons of Minnesota State - Moorhead, 3-1. UND won the first game 31-29, but MSU-Moorhead came back to win game two 30-25. North Dakota would answer back by winning games three and four to seal the victory. UND improves to 1-4 on the season while MSU-Moorhead falls to 3-1.
North Dakota's offense came out firing as four different players had 10 or more kills. Leading the way was sophomore Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) with 19 kills. Senior Tara Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) tallied 13 kills, sophomore Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) recorded 12 kills, and senior Mary Blume finished with 10 kills. Setter Allison Louwagie (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) set the way for offense with 54 set assists. Louwagie also finished with five kills and eight digs in the contest.
Defensively the Sioux also were firing on all cylinders as the Sioux had four players record 10 or more digs. Sophomore Ashley Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) led the way with 15 digs, Megan Langseth (So., Alexandria, Minn.) and Kristin Hoy (So., West Fargo, N.D.) each had 12 digs, and freshman Courtney Halvorson (Oklee, Minn.) finished with 10 digs.
With the win the Fighting Sioux end a four-game losing streak. UND will return to action on Friday when they host Northern State at 12 p.m. and Northern Michigan at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
