Volleyball loses both ends of their doubleheader

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team suffered two defeats, each in five games at the UND Fall Tournament. In their first game of the day, Northern State defeated the Sioux 3-2. In the nightcap, the Sioux would suffer the same fate as they lost to Northern Michigan 3-2. Against Northern State, UND won games two and four while Northern State won games one, three and five. Northern Michigan would win game won, but the Sioux stormed back to win both games two and three. It wasn't enough as the Wildcats proved to be too much and would win games four and five to seal the victory. With the two losses UND falls to 1-6 on the season. Northern State improved to 4-1 and Northern Michigan improved to 1-5.

Northern State
The Sioux were led on offense by sophomore Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) who finished the game with 18 kills. Hanson also had five block assists in the contest. Senior Mary Blume (Herman, Minn.) tallied 16 kills and three block assists. Tara Holmen (Sr., Berthold, N.D.) and Amanda Polzin (So., Hutchinson, Minn.) got in on the offensive display with 13 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Holmen led UND in blocks with seven. Setter Allison Louwagie (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) paced the offense with 56 set assists.

The UND offense was paced by a duo of sophomores. Ashley Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) and Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) recorded 35 and 21 digs, respectively. Holmen's 35 digs is a new career high for her while Langseth was two shy of her career high. Freshman Courtney Halvorson (Oklee, Minn.) dug up 14 in the match. 

Northern Michigan
Offensively, Britta Hanson had a career night. Hanson drilled home 21 kills en route to a career high. Seniors Tara Holmen and Mary Blume drilled home 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Sophomore Amanda Polzin put down 11 kills as well. Setter Laura Stirling (Jr., Fargo, N.D.) piled up 43 set assists and Allison Louwagie had 18.

Defensively The Sioux were paced again by the Langseth and Holmen duo. Ashley Holmen and Megan Langseth each had 14 digs apiece in the match. Freshman Courtney Halvorson had 12 digs and sophomore Kristin Hoy (West Fargo, N.D.) finished 10 digs. Hoy also tallied eight kills in the contest.


The Sioux are currently 1-2 in their home tournament. They will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center against Chadron State.
