Sioux use balanced attack to down UMC, 3-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to down the Golden Eagles, 3-1. Four different UND players had double-digit kill totals and four different players had double digit dig totals to help propel the Sioux to their fourth win of the season. UND now has a season record of 4-11 and 0-2 in the NCC. UMC drops to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC.

The Sioux jumped out to the early lead as they won game one 30-22. UMC answered back and won game two convincingly, 30-18. After the intermission UND stormed out and won game three, 30-23. In game four, UND opened with seven straight points before UMC would score their first point. UND would go on to win game four by the score of 30-18 to seal the four-game victory.

Offensively the Sioux were led by senior Mary Blume (Herman, Minn.). Blume was one of the four players to record double-digit kill totals as she finished with 16 kills. Fellow senior Tara Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) tallied 15 kills in the contest. The other two players who finished in double figures for kills were sophomores Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Stephanie Mason (Excelsior, Minn.) who finished with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) directed the balanced Sioux offense with 38 set assists. Langseth also contributed 13 digs to the Sioux defense.

Defensively, the Sioux were led by freshman Courtney Halvorson (Oklee, Minn.). Halvorson led the Sioux defense with 19 digs on the night. Freshman Erin Joki (Grand Rapids, Minn.) finished with 13 digs in her first start of the season. Joki also had six kills and seven set assists in the contest. Stephanie Mason totaled 12 digs for the Sioux.

UND has an off weekend in conference play and won't play until September 25 against Valley City State. The non-conference game will be played in Valley City, N.D. and will start at 7 p.m.

Notes: Megan Langseth recorded her second double-double the season as she had 38 set assists and 13 digs...Stephanie Mason tallied her first career double-double as she finished with 10 kills and 12 digs...Erin Joki got her first start of the season for UND...with the victory, UND has now won five straight matches against UMC.
