Sioux lose two at UMD Classic

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team lost to Ferris State in five games and in three games against #15 West Texas A & M. With the two losses, UND drops to 2-8 on the year. Ferris State improves to 8-1 and West Texas A & M improves to 7-4.

The Fighting Sioux volleyball team played another five game match, and lost another five game match. It is the fourth time this season that UND has played a five-game match, and lost. UND jumped out and won game one 30-26, but Ferris State answered back and won games two and three 21-30 and 19-30. UND responded by winning game four 30-24, to force game five. Ferris State would clinch the match victory with a 15-11 game five win.

Offensively, the Sioux were led by senior Mary Blume (Herman, Minn.) with 13 kills. Blume finished with a hitting percentage of .435. Sophomores Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) knocked home eight kills apiece in the contest. Setter Allison Louwagie (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) had 27 set assists and junior Laura Stirling (Fargo, N.D.) tallied 11 set assists in the contest.

Defensively the Sioux were led by freshman Courtney Halvorson (Oklee, Minn.). Halvorson paced the Sioux with 12 digs. Sophomores Stephanie Mason (Excelsior, Minn.) and Ashley Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) each had nine digs.

#15 West Texas A & M - 3    UND - 0
West Texas A & M beat the Sioux in all three games 30-17, 30-19, and 30-19. West Texas A & M is currently ranked #15 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll and finished the match against UND with a .383 hitting percentage.

Leading the Sioux offense was sophomore Amanda Polzin with nine kills. Senior Mary Blume and sophomore Britta Hanson each had seven kills apiece in the match. Sophomore setter Megan Langseth tallied 27 set assists in the contest. Langseth's 27 set assists are a new career high.

Defensively the Sioux were led by another freshman. Briena Hawkins recorded 12 digs to lead the Sioux. Senior Tara Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) finished with three block assists in the contest. With the three block assists, Holmen has tied the Fighting Sioux volleyball record in block assists. UND's record is currently held by Holmen and Karla Danielson. Danielson played for the Fighting Sioux from 1988-1991.

UND's will play two games tomorrow against Lake Superior State and MIchigan Tech. Lake Superior and UND will play at 9 a.m. and Michigan Tech and UND will play at 2 p.m.
