DICKINSON, N.D. ? With the aid of a team-high 15 digs by junior Lindsay Vortherms the University of North Dakota posted its 17th victory of the season Wednesday evening against Dickinson State. The Fighting Sioux swept the Blue Hawks in three-straight 25-15 sets.
Vortherms' digs pushed her over the 1,000 dig mark and placed her into UND's 1,000 dig club. She is the 13th student-athlete to capture over a grand of digs in the program's history.
With the win, North Dakota moved to 17-2 on the season. Dickinson State is now 3-11 overall with a 1-1 record in the Dakota Athletic Conference.
This is the third match in a row that the Sioux have walked away victorious with three set sweeps and the 11th time they have done so this season. Under the direction of Lisa Kissee (1986-92), the 2002 Sioux squad totaled 14 three set sweeps ? a UND record.
First-years Annika Smed (Albert Lea, Minn.) and Taylor Bohannon (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) added to the squad's dig total with nine and seven digs respectively.
The North Dakota offensive was led by juniors Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.). Polizin posted a team-high nine kills (.368 pct.) with two digs, an assist and a block assist. Hanson logged a team-high .471 attack percentage with eight kills, four block solos, two digs, and a team-leading 12 points.
Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) added 33 assists.
Dickinson State was led by Pollyana Costa who logged six kills (.100 pct.) and eight digs. Sasha Bruels and Lilian Odek both had 14 digs and Perolla Costa tallied 17 assists.
After being on the road for the past three weeks, the Sioux make their return to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Tuesday, Oct. 7 with a 7 p.m. match versus Presentation College. When the two teams met last week in Aberdeen, S.D., UND swept the Saints in three straight sets.
