GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of Mary took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and wouldn't relinquish it in a 6-2 victory over the Sioux.
Mary's Tyler Liffrig hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning to put the Marauders up 3-0. The Marauders would add to their lead by scoring another run in the third to take the 4-0 lead.
UND would score its first run of the game in the fourth inning. Jabby Bakhit (So., Omaha, Neb.) led off the inning with a walk. Bakhit moved over to third base on two wild pitches and would score on an Andrew Marek (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) groundout to second base.
The Sioux would score its second and final run of the game on a double-play groundout by Josh Lagein (Fr., Devils Lake, N.D.). Lagein's groundout would score Chris Gulsvig (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) from third base. Gulsvig reached base on a hit-by-pitch.
Ryne Jungling continued to swing a hot bat for the Sioux as he went 2-4 in the contest, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Derek Biermaier (Fr., Roseau, Minn.) would get the loss in the contest. Biermaier threw three innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Biermaier falls to 0-2 on the season.
With the loss, UND falls to 11-15 overall this season. The Sioux will return to conference play on Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders against Augustana. On Saturday, the games will be played at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Kraft Field. Sunday's games will begin a little bit earlier, starting at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Kraft Field.
