GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? The Fighting Sioux baseball team defeated Valley City State in a non-conference game, 4-2. The Sioux offense pounded out 12 hits in the contest and improve to 8-9 overall. Valley City State falls to 6-12 overall on the season.
The Sioux scored the first run of the contest in the second inning. Anthony Brenner (So., Chaska, Minn.) reached base on a fielding error by the Viking first baseman. Brenner scored on Chris Gulsvig's (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) double to right-centerfield.
In the third inning, the Sioux would add two more runs on back-to-back base hits from Andrew Marek (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Andrew Gudmunson (So., Minot, N.D.). Jabby Bakhit (So., Omaha, Neb.) lead off the third inning with a double to right field, his first extra-base hit of the season. With two outs, Marek singled to right-centerfield to score Bakhit. Gudmunson then doubled to left-center and Marek scored from first base.
The final run for North Dakota came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gudmunson singled up the middle to score Marek. Marek reached base when he doubled down the left field line.
Valley City State threated in the sixth inning when they scored two runs, but the Viking offense sputtered in the final three innings. Valley City State lead off the top of the sixth inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Alex Wheal then grounded into a double-play that scored Jeremy Wiebe from third base. Chris Olson singled to right-centerfield and scored Tanner Bombenger on the play.
Freshman David Spies (Grand Forks, N.D.) picked up the victory in the contest. Spies started the game and pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Reliever Sam Kinne (So., St. Paul, Minn.) threw the third and fourth innings and struck out three. Junior Cody Randt (Bemidji, Minn.) allowed five hits and two runs in his innings of work. Freshman Scott Eul (Rosemount, Minn.) pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing no hits while striking out one and walking one batter. Jameson Benson (So., Karlstad, Minn.) picks up the save in the contest by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
With the win, Spies picks up his first collegiate victory in the contest. Benson picks up his second save of the season.
Bakhit, Marek, Gudmunson, Gulsvig, Ryne Jungling (So., Mandan, N.D.), and Josh Nelson (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) each had two hits for the Fighting Sioux offense.
North Dakota returns to NCC play this weekend in a series with Minnesota State. Right now the series is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but might be pushed back due to snow. Check out www.fightingsioux.com for weather-related postponements or cancellations.
