North Dakota goes undefeated at Border Olympics; win streak moves to eight

UND wins fifth straight, opens with 3-1 victory over BSU

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? For the sixth-straight time, the University of North Dakota posted a victory over Bemidji State. This time it extended a 2008, five-game unbeaten streak. After falling short in the first set (20-25) of the home-opener, the Fighting Sioux won three in a row (25-19, 25-19, 25-14) to take the match, 3-1. This is the seventh consecutive year that UND has won its first home match of the season.

Redshirt freshman Devin Trefz (Bagley, Minn.) led the Sioux with 15 kills, two aces, and three digs. Juniors Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) each added another dozen kills. Junior Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) finished with a .500 (3-for-6) attack percentage and 43 assists. At the net, Polzin and Treftz tallied four block assists.

 

The Beavers were led by Nicole Olson and Jennifer Jackila who both tabbed 8 kills and one block assist. Percentagewise, BSU's Hannah Eilers led the team after hitting 7-for-13 (46.2 percent). Erikka Korpi and Kimberly Hacker were the only two players from either side to record solo blocks; they each had one.

 

As a team, UND (5-0) finished with a 31.9 (56-for-119) attack percentage while holding BSU (3-2) to 20.0 percent (42-for-120). The Sioux were able to hold the Beavers to less that 30 percent in all four sets.

 

Tuesday's crowd of 339 was one of the largest in attendace for Sioux volleyball at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

 

This weekend, the Sioux travel to Laredo, Texas, for the Texas A&M International Border Olympics. UND will take on Tarleton, the host team ? TAMI, and Texas-Brownsville. Action begins on Sept. 5, with an 11 a.m. (Central) match against Tarleton.
