Harkins, Wiebe named FSC Athletes of the Week

GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Senior guard Daniel Harkins and freshman forward Alyssa Wiebe have been named the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux Club Athletes of the Week for the week of Dec. 29 to Jan. 4.

 

Harkins scored a career-high 29 points, the most by a Sioux player this season, in UND's 97-93 overtime victory over Minot State last Friday night (Jan. 2) in Grand Forks. The Portage, Wis., native went 8-for-14 from the field and 13-for-14 from the free throw line in helping UND rally from a 16-point deficit.

 

Earlier in the week, Harkins scored a team-high 15 points in a 79-60 win over Minnesota, Crookston (Dec. 30). Harkins hit a season-high three 3-pointers in four attempts and finished 6-for-9 from the field against the Golden Eagles.

 

In 13 games this season, Harkins is averaging a team-leading 14.0 points per game for the Fighting Sioux (8-5).

 

Harkins and the Sioux return to action tonight at Texas A&M. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

 

Wiebe scored the overtime winner in UND's 4-3 victory over RPI last Friday (Jan. 2) at the St. Cloud State Husky Tournament, her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season. A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Wiebe dded two more goals the following day as the Sioux battled 10th-ranked Wayne State to a 3-3 overtime tie.

 

In 20 games this season, Wiebe ranks second on the team in points (18) and goals (10) and ranks seventh in the WCHA rookie scoring race.

 

Wiebe and the Sioux (11-7-2, 7-6-1 WCHA) return to St. Cloud State this weekend for a conference series against the Huskies.
