Sioux earn record sixth-straight sweep in victory over Chicago State

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The University of North Dakota volleyball team picked up its school-record sixth straight sweep on Sunday, blanking visiting Chicago State 3-0 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Fighting Sioux (16-6, 7-1 GW) also allowed the fewest points ever in a three-set, rally scoring match (30) by defeating the Cougars (0-21, 0-9 GW) 25-11, 25-10 and 25-9.

Sophomore Annika Smed registered her team leading sixth double-double of the season with match-highs in both kills (11) and digs (13). Nine different Fighting Sioux players tallied a kill in the contest as the home team dominated that category 43-10. UND equaled its season-high attack percentage with a .330  clip (43k-13e-91a), while holding the Cougars to just a -.089 (10k-18e-90k) mark.

“It was a big weekend for us and to finish it off with a nice victory against Chicago State was important,” UND head coach Ashley Hardee said. “We played well today and did a nice job of being aggressive with both our attacks and our serves.”

The Sioux established a season-high with 12 service aces as sophomore Devin Trefz led that effort with a career-high seven. Senior Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) equaled her career-high with four. Langseth also added 31 assists in the victory.

UND jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set behind the serving of Langseth, who had three of the team's seven first-set aces in that opening stretch. Langseth finished with four aces in the set, while Trefz added three.

Senior Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) had five of her seven kills in the second set as the Sioux built an 11-2 advantage in the early going. Hanson also had three block assists in the set and moved into a tie for second on the single-season charts in that category with four overall. She now has 107 for the campaign.

In the third set, the Cougars kept it close early on, trailing only 9-8 before the Sioux closed out the match with a 16-1 run. Smed served out 10 of those points and finished with a .389 attack percentage (11k-4e-18a).

The 2008 team set the previous record of five straight sweeps a season ago, while the previous record for fewest points allowed in a rally-scoring match was 45 vs. Evergreen State in 2002.

The Fighting Sioux wrap up their longest homestand of the season next Saturday with a Halloween match against Utah Valley at 12 p.m. The Wolverines are the lone team to beat UND in Great West Conference play this season.
