Sioux Volleyball rolls to eighth straight victory with sweep of Chicago State

CHICAGO — Sophomore Devin Trefz (Bagley, Minn.) led the way with 12 kills as the University of North Dakota volleyball team secured its eighth straight victory with a 3-0 sweep of Chicago State on Thursday at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

The Sioux (18-6, 9-1 Great West), who set a program record allowing 30 points to the Cougars in an earlier meeting this season, surrendered just 31 points this time around as they claimed their 11th sweep of the season and eighth in league play (25-8, 25-7, 25-16).

“This was a nice all-around performance by our team,” UND head coach Ashley Hardee said. “We competed hard and stayed disciplined both offensively and defensively.  We kind of got complacent in the third set, but we straightened things out and were able to finish things off with a nice run.”

Senior Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) had a perfect night of attacking, finishing off nine kills on nine swings as the Sioux set a season-high with a .333 hitting percentage (37k-8e-87a). The Sioux defense also came up with a nice outing, holding the Cougars to a -.072 attack percentage.

Junior Erin Joki (Grand Rapids, Minn.) continued her efficient attacking as she hit over .400 for the second straight match, tallying a .600 attack percentage (7k-1e-10a).  Sophomore Danielle Luetzen (Minot, N.D.) saw her most extensive action of the season, registering match highs in both assists (24) and blocks (3). She also added two aces and five digs.

The Sioux jumped out to 8-0 lead in game one and breezed to a first-set victory of 25-8. Hanson had seven of her nine kills in the first set as she played in just the first two sets. Senior Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) had six assists in the opening set before giving way to understudy Luetzen in set number two.

“We had a chance to go pretty deep into our bench tonight and that was important,” Hardee added. “Our entire team works hard each week and it was nice to be able to see Danny and some others contribute to the win tonight.”

Luetzen set up the Sioux on 14 kills in the second set as the team equaled its school record for fewest points allowed in a rally-scoring game by posting a 25-7 victory. Trefz had five kills in to pace the attack.

The Cougars kept UND on its toes in the third set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and then squaring things up at 13, but the Sioux responded with a 12-3 run to close out the match. Trefz had six kills in the final set, while Joki added four.

UND remains on the road for one more regular-season match this Saturday at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Sioux and Highlanders are set to play at 1 p.m. CT.
