Jonathan Toews named to Canadian Olympic team

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--Former University of North Dakota All-American and current Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has been named to the 2010 Canadian Olympic team, it was announced today by Hockey Canada.

Toews becomes the third current or former Sioux to be named to a 2010 Olympic hockey team, joining Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux, who were named to the U.S. women's team earlier this month.

In 33 games this season, Toews has 11 goals and 20 assists and has captained the Blackhawks to the best record in the NHL's Western Conference. Last season he played in all 82 games and scored 34 goals and 35 assists for 69 points while leading Chicago to the Western Conference finals.

Toews played for the Fighting Sioux in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and scored 85 points in 76 career games. He was named a first team All-American in 2006-07.

Toews is the 21st Fighting Sioux men's hockey player named to an Olympic team and the first named to a Canadian team since goalie Ed Belfour in 2002.

USA Hockey will name its men's Olympic team on New Year's Day.

The 2010 Winter Olympic men's hockey schedule begins Feb. 16 in Vancouver.
