Pair of Fighting Sioux recruits selected in 2009 NHL Entry Draft

GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? University of North Dakota recruits Corban Knight and Mike Cichy were each selected today in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Montreal, Quebec. Knight was drafted by Florida in the fifth round (135th overall) while Cichy was taken by Montreal in the seventh round (199th overall).

 

Cichy was named most valuable player of the United States Hockey League playoffs after leading Indiana to the league championship and scoring a playoff-leading 25 points in 16 games, including a USHL playoff-record 16 assists. A native of New Hartford, Conn., Cichy was acquired by Indiana during the season from Tri-City and went on to score 47 points (24 goals, 23 assists) in 30 regular season games for the Ice. He had scored 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 26 games with Tri-City.

 

The 5-foot-11, 187-pound Cichy also earned tournament MVP honors in leading the United States to a gold medal at the World Junior ?A' Challenge in Camrose, Alberta.

 

Knight spent the 2008-09 season with Okotoks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and was named the league's rookie of the year after leading all first-year players with 72 points (34 goals, 38 assists) in 61 games. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder finished eighth in the overall scoring race and participated in the 2009 AJHL All-Star Game.

 

A native of Oliver, British Columbia, Knight added another 10 goals in nine playoff games.

 

Cichy will join UND for the 2009-10 season and Knight will join UND in 2010-11.

 

The Sioux open the 2009-10 season Oct. 4 with an exhibition game against Manitoba and will begin the regular season Oct. 9-10 against Merrimack in Grand Forks.
