GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Since 1894, the first season of football at the University of North Dakota, team captains have been established to provide leadership, guidance and a single voice for a team of over 80 individuals.
While traditionally the title of "Team Captain" was reserved for a single player - the first being F. R. Bechdolt - UND first chose dual leaders in 1901 when Lynn J. Frazier and William Lemke were selected. For Frazier, it was his third-consecutive season as captain.
After moving back towards tradition for 34 seasons, North Dakota once again selected two players to captain the team. In 1962, the team once again broke from tradition when Robert Enebak, Gene Murphy, Maurice Paulsen, and Gary Sukut established the first captain foursome. Since that year, UND football has chosen anywhere from two to five players to represent the team on the gridiron.
When Danny Freund (Kenosha, Wis.), Mitch Braegelmann (St. Cloud, Minn.), Brady Trenbeath (Cavalier, N.D.), and Rory Manke (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) were selected last season, it marked the 14th time four captains were chosen. This past spring, seniors Andrew Miller (Menomonie, Wis.) and Marcus Tibesar (St. Paul, Minn.) were chosen to lead the Fighting Sioux as they head into their second year of transition into NCAA Division I and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
In the 115 years of North Dakota football, over 200 student-athletes have been granted the opportunity and the privilege to serve as a UND football captain. And no matter what you call them - NoDaks, Flickertails, or Fighting Sioux - each of these men had the same thing - pride in themselves, pride in their team and pride in their school. Go Sioux!
