UPDATE: One last terrific tribute to "Schultzie," courtesy of Pedersen's blog.
UPDATE: An interesting read on Schultz from the blog of local sports reporter Mitchell Blair.
UPDATE: Schultz did indeed confirm his immediate retirement this morning at a press conference. He has embarked on a business venture that was too good to pass up. More here from the blog of Roughriders' radio play-by-play man Rod Pedersen and here from the Regina Leader-Post.
Here is the official press release from the Roughriders.
ORIGINAL BLOG ENTRY: Reports have surfaced out of Regina, Saskatchewan, that former UND All-American and nine-year Canadian Football League veteran Scott Schultz is on the verge of announcing his retirement from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Regina Leader-Post reports that a media conference involving Schultz is tentatively scheduled for today.
Neither Schultz nor the organization has spoken publicly about the report, although Schultz was absent from practice yesterday after requesting a "personal day of leave."
Schultz, a native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, lettered for the Sioux from 1997 to 2000 and earned second-team All-American honors as a senior. He also earned consecutive All-North Central Conference first team accolades.
The Roughriders made Schultz the top pick in the 2001 CFL draft and after brief stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers, Schultz went on to play in 128 games for Saskatchewan and was named a CFL All-Star in 2005. Schultz helped the Roughriders to a Grey Cup championship in 2007.
In five games this season, Schultz had three tackles.
