Utah Valley selected to win inaugural Great West baseball title, Sioux picked fifth

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Great West Conference baseball coaches have picked Utah Valley as the favorite to win the league's inaugural baseball title, league officials announced on Friday. The Wolverines, who received fewer first place votes than two others teams, managed to secure the top spot in the poll with 51 overall points.

New York Tech and Houston Baptist, who received three first-place votes each, followed closely behind UVU with 50 and 48 points, respectively. Texas-Pan American came in fourth in the balloting with 37 points, while North Dakota trailed the Broncs by only one points for fifth (36 points).

The 2010 season will be the second for the Fighting Sioux in Division I baseball. The team spent its first year playing as an independent.

Northern Colorado (34), New Jersey Institute of Technology (22) and Chicago State (10) round out the poll in sixth, seventh and eighth-place, respectively.

The quest for the 2010 title will begin on April 9 with a full slate of weekend conference games. The regular-season championship will be decided by a single-round robin of four-game series. The season will culminate at the Great West Conference Postseason Baseball Tournament on May 25-28, 2010 at Edinburg, Texas, and will be hosted by Texas-Pan American.
