Biermaier collects Great West weekly pitching honor

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Junior Derek Biermaier (Roseau, Minn.) shared Great West Pitcher of the Week honors, league officials announced on Tuesday. The right hander fanned a career-high 12 in a complete game victory over North Dakota State on Easter Sunday to share the weekly accolades with Northern Colorado's Mike Shannon.

After surrendering three runs in the first inning, Biermaier settled into a groove allowing just one run the rest of the way as the two in-state rivals faced off the first time as Division I opponents. Biermaier had at least two strike outs in each of the first five innings and struck out the side in the third.

"Derek continues to pitch well for us and it was huge for him to come out in game one of Sunday's doubleheader and give us a chance to sweep and build some momentum in the series with our in-state rivals," UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. "He really settled down after the first inning, had a career-high in strike outs and really gave our team a lift."

For Biermaier, the complete game was the second of his career as the Sioux and the Bison resumed their rivalry by playing a four-game series for the first contests between the two clubs since the 2005 campaign.

Biermaier and the Sioux will open Great West Conference play on Friday at Utah Valley. The Wolverines' Jace Brinkerhoff was named the league's Player of the Week on Tuesday as well. UND and UVU will play a four-game series to kick off the inaugural season of conference play.
