Edinburg, Texas – Junior Jake Magner (Grand Rapids, Minn.) earned a spot on the All-Great West first team and classmate Josh Lagein (Devils Lake, N.D.) was named to the second team on Wednesday prior to the first pitch of the inaugural league tournament at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
“Both of those guys are very deserving of their respective honors,” UND head coach Jeff Dodson said. “Jake had another great season at the plate and set some records along the way, while Josh was the catalyst for our offense and helped us win games in a number of different ways.”
Magner put together one of the best single seasons in Fighting Sioux history at the plate, batting .345 with 19 home runs and 53 RBI during the regular season.
The Sioux first baseman went 2-for-4 in the opening game of the tournament to set the UND single-season record for hits with 70 on the campaign. The first of those two hits was Magner's 20th home run of the season, which tied Carter Rogolla (1998) for the single-season record in that category.
Magner's 20 home runs lead the Great West Conference and his 55 RBI are now tied for the third most in a single season at UND.
Lagein secured a spot on the second team after setting career-highs during the regular season in hits (50), runs (48), home runs (eight) and RBI (32). The Sioux centerfielder and leadoff hitter was also hit by a pitch 22 times this season, which tied the UND single season mark.
The Sioux will continue Great West Tournament action against top-seeded Utah Valley on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
