Fighting Sioux saddle Broncs with 3-0 victory

EDINBURG, Texas - With a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-15) win over Texas-Pan American, the Fighting Sioux tallied their fourth sweep in five matches and improved their record to 17-4 overall and 4-1 in the Great West Conference. UTPA dropped to 5-17, 1-4 GWC after falling victim to its third straight conference sweep.

"We had a great offensive performance today against UTPA," head coach Ashley Hardee said. "We finished with a .360 hitting percentage as a team and were able to side-out nearly 70 percent of the time. That's above our average."

UND held the Broncs to a .133 hitting percentage.

Leading the way for the Sioux was outside hitter Devin Trefz. The senior from Bagley, Minn., landed 12 kills on 17 swings for a .588 hitting percentage. She also led the team with a trio of service aces.

Sharing the setting duties, sophomore Ellen Krueger (Lakeville, Minn.) and redshirt freshman Nikki Husfeldt (Andover, Minn.) combined for 37 assists. Krueger also tallied three digs and a block assist.

"We're still trying a few things, so we used both Nikki and Ellen today," Hardee said. "They both did an excellent job of moving the ball around and were able to create some great opportunities for our hitters to score."

Senior libero Taylor Bohannon (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) finished the match with a team-high 14 digs. Trefz and sophomore middle blocker Ronni Munkeby (Lisbon, N.D.) topped the squad with three blocks apiece.

Not only was Hardee impressed by the way his team played, he also found some positives off of the court.

"Our four seniors really stepped up today," Hardee said. "They not only played well, but they were able to provide the team with some great leadership when we needed it most. We're in the middle of this road trip and will only be home for a short time before we leave town again. It's this time of the year when we really need to rely on our seniors to keep the team motivated and focused on the task at hand."

The Sioux will have little time to rest as they hit the court tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face first-time opponent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
