PJ Sparks - 2010 Highlight video
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota head football coach Chris Mussman and his staff announced today that PJ Sparks, the grandson of former UND tight end Jim Wiedmann (1968-70), has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for UND starting the 2011 season.
"Our football program has a long tradition of sons, brothers, and grandsons following footsteps and making the commitment to play at UND," said Mussman. "We're excited to bring in PJ, not only for his playing ability, but to help strengthen that line of tradition.
"His commitment came in last minute after his campus visit last week. PJ has quality character, great athletic ability and a real passion for the game. He'll be a great addition to this year's signing class and will help build our team for the future."
A 5-9 senior from Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz., Sparks was named to the 2010 All-Northwest Region first team as an offensive specialist and was named all-region second team and all-state honorable mention as a running back. Voted the most valuable offensive player by his team, he finished his senior season with 125 carries for 1,007 yards and 14 touchdowns and tallied 131 yards on 12 receptions, including one touchdown catch.
As a junior, Sparks was named to the all-region first team as an all-purpose player. His stats included 588 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
He is the son of former NFL defensive back Phillippi Sparks (Giants, 1992-99; Cowboys, 2000) and the younger brother of 2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.
Sparks' commitment was the 19th received by Mussman and his staff during this signing period. He is this year's first signee to come out of Arizona.
