IN THE PAINT
• UND will look to close out the 2010-11 regular season with a three-game winning streak when they venture into the UTPA Fieldhouse to take on the Broncs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
• The Sioux won a double-overtime thriller, 78-74, in their first visit to the fieldhouse last season.
• As far as the Great West Tournament is concerned, the Fighting Sioux have only one thing to find out on the final day of league action. That is who will be their opponent at next week's tournament.
• UND locked down the No. 3 seed on Thursday with its 74-70 overtime win at HBU.
• The top four seeds have been determined with Utah Valley holding down the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season title with an 11-1 record. NJIT will be the No. 2 seed regardless of what happens in its tilt with Chicago State on Saturday. The Highlanders are 8-3 and would own the tiebreaker with the Sioux if they were to lose. South Dakota is 6-5 in league action and will be the No. 4 seed.
• The remaining three seeds will be decided after Saturday's contests. Chicago State is currently 3-8 going into its contest at NJIT, while Houston Baptist and Texas-Pan American are both 2-9.
• Freshman
Troy Huff scored a career-high 31 points and classmate
Aaron Anderson hit a big 3-pointer in the final minute of overtime to secure the win over the Huskies. Huff also grabbed 12 rebounds to post his third double-double of the season.
• Huff's 10th rebound was his biggest as the offensive board allowed him to make a putback with 14 seconds to play in regulation that inevitably sent the game into OT.
• Anderson finished with 10 points, five of which came in that final minute of overtime.
• Huff's 31-point effort was the first 30-plus scoring game for a Sioux player since junior
Patrick Mitchell scored 33 in a home win over NJIT last season. It was Huff's third straight 20-plus scoring game. He is averaging 24.3 ppg in those three contests.
• Huff's scoring surge has vaulted him up to fifth on the all-time freshman scoring charts at UND with 375 points.
• Mitchell connected on a big 3-pointer of his own down the stretch against the Huskies, cutting a five-point deficit down to just two with 1:35 to play. He finished with 12 points, which was his 20th double-figure scoring game of the season.
• Freshman
Jamal Webb showed why he is the Great West Conference's top rebounding guard (5.1 ppg) at Houston Baptist. The Sioux point guard grabbed a career-high 11 boards and also added seven points and seven assists.
• Webb (50.0 percent) and Huff (46.5 percent) rank second and third in 3-point percentage in GWC action.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
The Broncs opened the season winning just three of their first 24 games, but have won three of their last five. That includes their last two, which is the club's first consecutive triumphs of the campaign.
The latest win was a dramatic one as sophomore Brandon Provost, the team's leading scorer at 13.0 ppg, hit a layup with three seconds left to beat South Dakota 75-74 on Thursday. Provost finished with 22 points in that contest that saw the lead change three different times in the final minute of play.
Provost has been deadly from beyond the arc this season in GWC play, connecting on 38-of-68 attempts (55.9 percent). He has upped his scoring average to 17.3 ppg in league contests.
The Broncs' second-leading scorer is sophomore Aaron Urbanus, who has also been heating it up from distance. He is shooting 42.9 percent (27-of-63). Urbanus is averaging 12.3 ppg overall and 12.9 in GWC play.
Provost, Urbanus and forward Matt Mierzycki have started all 29 games for second-year head coach Ryan Marks. Mierzycki is the team's top rebounder at 5.8 boards per game and the senior is averaging 7.2 ppg.
UTPA snapped a 15-game losing streak earlier this season with a 76-60 victory over Houston Baptist at home (Feb. 9). That victory was the Broncs' first in this latest stretch where they have won out of five. One of their two losses was a 65-63 overtime loss to NJIT, who made a shot at the buzzer to escape with a victory.
This will be the second visit by North Dakota to UTPA's Fieldhouse, which was renovated during the offseason to feature new bleachers, a new floor and a new UTPA logo. The first trip ended in a thrilling 78-74 double-overtime victory for the Sioux. Senior
Travis Bledsoe scored 24 points and classmate
Travis Mertens added 17 for UND.
LAST MEETING VS. UTPA (1/27/11)
The Fighting Sioux shot a season-high 61.7 percent from the floor to post a 91-82 victory over UTPA at The Betty. Five UND players reached double figures as
Josh Schuler led the way with 19 points on 5-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Both teams connected on 12 of their 19 three-point attempts in the contest, which featured a high-scoring second half. The Broncs outscored UND, 49-48, but the Sioux had built a 43-33 lead at the break. Freshman
Brandon Brekke added a double-double for the Sioux with 17 points and 11 rebounds and classmate
Jamal Webb had 10 points and eight assists. For UTPA, guard Aaron Urbanus and reserve forward Ruben Cabrera each scored 20 points to pace the visitors. Urbanus knocked down five 3-pointers in the contest.
