TUCSON, Ariz. --- The University of North Dakota softball team rallied for a 6-1 victory over Southern Utah in its final game at the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Fighting Sioux finish the tournament with a 1-4 record and improve to 4-5 overall.
Sophomore Abby Jo Tometich (Aberdeen, Wash.) pitched the complete game for UND and gave up only one run, a home run in the fourth inning. She scattered six hits and two walks throughout the game and was helped out by her defense that did not commit an error in the game.
"Our offense responded well today," head coach Eric Oakley said. "Abby Jo pitched great. We executed on offense and defense. That's the brand of softball we want to play. We need to build from this."
North Dakota jumped out to a quick lead in the game and never looked back, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The Fighting Sioux strung four hits and two walks together in the inning.
Although tallying 15 hits in the game, UND was held scoreless after the first inning until the seventh inning when junior Kenna Olsen (Issaquah, Wash.) connected for her first home run of the season to left-center field to lead off the inning.
The Fighting Sioux would follow it up with three more hits in the inning to score its sixth run of the game.
Sophomore Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Wash.) and junior Cami Bennett (Grants Pass, Ore.) led the Sioux with 3-hit games. Nine different players for UND collected at least one hit, one run or one RBI in the game.
The Fighting Sioux return to action next weekend Best Western Marina Grand Islanders Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
