UND softball drops games to UC Davis and Nevada

RENO, Nev. – The University of North Dakota softball team suffered two losses on the second day of the Wolf Pack Classic, dropping a 9-2 decision to UC Davis and a 9-1 decision to Nevada on Saturday.

"Some of the bring spots were eclipsed by some miscues and missed opportunities today,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “Players unable to go due to sickness or injury have made us stretch our bench. However, underneath the rubble is a good team on the brink of crawling out.”

Taking of UC Davis in the first game of the day, the Aggies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning. North Dakota would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth after hits by Megan Keegan and Emily Bell scored two runs for UND. Keegan led UND with two hits in the game.

Freshman right-hander Kaylin VanDomelen made her third start of her career, pitching all seven innings for UND. She recorded a total of six strikeouts in the contest, giving up seven earned runs on 13 hits.

In the second game of the day, UND took on Nevada for the third time in just over 24 hours. The extra experience against the Wolf Pack looked to give an advantage for UND early in the contest, as North Dakota was only down 2-1 after the third inning. However, the heavy hitting for Nevada took over after the third and the Wolf Pack would power its way to a 9-1 win, scoring seven combined runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

D Jantzer led UND with two hits as North Dakota recorded a total of seven hits in the contest. The lone run for UND came in the top of the third when Jantzer singled up the middle to score Nicole Babrowski from second.

Megan Hedstrom made the start in the circle for North Dakota, pitching 4.2 innings before Jackie Lilek took over in relief.

North Dakota finishes the Wolf Pack Classic with a single game against UC Davis on Sunday. The game will be played at 10 a.m.
