SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of North Dakota softball team lost 9-0 to Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets scored nine runs off of 14 hits to move to 3-0 in Big Sky Conference play, while UND only managed two hits in the contest and now moves to 0-3 in the Big Sky.
“In what was our most important game of the year so far, we didn't show up to play, and that's on me,” head coach Eric Oakley said. “I believe the talent is here, we are just struggling to find the right combination of skill and desire' we will keep trying.”
Senior Caralyn Chewning and sophomore Taylor Hansen recorded one hit each for UND. Chewning went 1-1 on the day, as her other appearance at the plate resulted in her getting on base after being hit by a pitch.
Freshman Kaylin VanDomelen started for UND in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings before being relieved by Sophie Pratt. VanDomelen recorded two strikeouts and Pratt struck out one.
Sacramento State used a three-run first inning to take charge right out of the gates. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hornets powered in six runs to seal the victory.
UND continues Big Sky play with a trip to Portland State, March 28-29, for a three-game series. The first game of a doubleheader on March 28 will begin at 6 p.m. (CT), while the lone game on March 29 will start at 3 p.m. (CT).
