PORTLAND – Portland State prevailed over North Dakota 80-70 in Big Sky men's basketball action Thursday at the Stott Center. The Vikings (13-11, 7-7 BSC) led by 20 after a 13-0 run to open the second half, but UND (8-17, 4-10 BSC) trimmed its deficit all the way down to a point before PSU closed out the win at the free throw line.

Senior Deshaun Wiggins carried the Vikings to a 36-29 lead at the half. He scored 19 points and went 5-for-8 from the floor along with a 6-for-6 effort at the foul line in the opening 20 minutes and finished with a game-high 27 points. Tiegbe Bamba added 17 points for the Vikings and Braxton Tucker chipped in with 13.

Sophomore Quinton Hooker led the visitors with 17 points and Josiah Coleman had all 12 of his points during the second-half comeback attempt. Those were the most points for Coleman in Big Sky play this season as he also added a team-high eight rebounds.

“We didn't come out with the defensive focus in the second half that we did to start the game,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “They are a big second-half team and we knew that, so our lapse there out of halftime really cost us. We had to play catch up the rest of the way and just could not get all the way back.”

PSU would get its first-half lead thanks to an 11-for-12 effort from the stripe, while UND never got there in the opening 20 minutes. The Vikings would finish 25-for-28 from the stripe, which allowed them to finish off the season sweep of UND for the first time.

True freshman Kraig Shields established a career-high in the first half with eight points and added four rebounds to help UND trim what once was a 13-point first half deficit down to seven by halftime.

After UND closed within 59-58 on a layup by Coleman, Bamba hit a jumper for the Vikings and on their next trip PSU got an offensive rebound and turned the extra possession into a 3-pointer by Zach Gengler as the shot clock expired.

The loss is the first for UND in a Thursday Big Sky road game this season after the team had won the opening game of its first three league road swings.

Coleman and Shields, who added a career-high seven boards, helped UND hold a 45-33 edge on the glass, but UND shot only 38 percent from the field, while PSU finished with a 43 percent clip.

UND wraps up the road swing Saturday at Sacramento State. Tipoff against the Hornets is set for 9 p.m. CT.
