CEDAR CITY, Utah – Senior Jaron Nash led five double-figure scorers with 21 points as North Dakota escaped Cedar City with a 89-85 overtime victory over Southern Utah in Big Sky men's basketball action on Thursday. Junior Estan Tyler finished with 18 points as 13 of those came at the foul stripe where he sealed the first win for UND (8-13, 4-6 BSC) over the Thunderbirds (5-15, 2-7 BSC) in Centrum Arena.
“We played very well in the first half, but that was not our greatest second half," UND head coach Brian Jones said. "We turned the ball over a lot early and let them back in it.
"We found a way to get the job done though, made some plays when we needed them in overtime to finally get a win in this building.”
It is the first time this season that UND had five double-figure scorers in a game as Nash and redshirt freshman Carson Shanks both finished with double-doubles. Nash went 9-for-15 from the field and had 11 rebounds, while Shanks registered the first double-double of his career with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Those two helped UND control the glass with a 44-36 advantage.
Junior Terrel de Rouen had 12 of his career-high equaling 17 points after halftime as UND withstood a momentum shift going into overtime after a 3-pointer by A.J. Hess ended regulation squared up at 75-75.
Hess, who led his team all the way back from a 13-point halftime deficit, led the Thunderbirds with 18 points. He went 4-for-6 from deep and was one of five T-Birds to also finish in double figures.
UND opened the extra session on a 6-0 run, however, and never trailed in the closing five minutes to post back-to-back Big Sky wins for the first time this season.
UND grabbed a 41-28 lead at the break behind 10 points from Nash. SUU opened the game 8-for-10 from the floor, but finished the rest of the half just 2-for-12, allowing the visitors to grow their lead to double figures.
The T-Birds would finish with a 48 percent clip from the floor, while UND made 44 percent of its field goals. Senior Lenny Antwi added 10 points off the UND bench to round out the quintet of double-figure scorers.
UND will stay on the road with another Big Sky tilt at Northern Arizona on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
