Hard breaks home-run record in loss to SUU

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Freshman infielder Shelby Hard became the sole owner of the North Dakota softball record for single-season home runs, as she hit her 14th homer of the season in a 8-3 loss to Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon.

Hard now owns both the freshman single-season and all-time single-season home run records. Her 14 home runs also places her tied for ninth in program history for career home runs.

All three of UND's runs on the day were scored from solo home runs, as both Hard and Maria Dendinger hit homers in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Lilek hit her sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the third to put UND on the board.

Southern Utah went back to pitcher Ashley Ostler, who had shutout North Dakota in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader, to start in the circle. Again, UND's batsmen had trouble with Ostler, as she kept UND off the board for the first two innings, as her side jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third.

However, UND got its first run on Ostler when Lilek hit a bomb over the center field wall with one out in the bottom of the third. It would be the only run conceded by Ostler on the weekend, as Hanna Wynn came in to pitch for Southern Utah in the bottom of the fourth.

North Dakota then strung together two home runs in three at-bats in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 7-3. After the two solo shots, Southern Utah replaced Wynn with Katie Greenberg, who would pitch the rest of the game conceding only one hit.

Dendinger led UND at the plate, as she recorded three of UND's eight hits. In the circle, Hannah Bergh pitched in relief, conceding only two earned runs in 4.2 innings.

North Dakota takes to the field for the last time at home this season on Tuesday, April 28, hosting South Dakota for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT).
