MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Second-seeded Minnesota got a handful from North Dakota before eventually winning, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament Friday evening at the Pavilion. The Gophers advance to play Hawai'i, who outlasted Southern California in five sets, in Saturday's second round.
Senior Chelsea Moser closed her final season with 11 kills (986 career) while junior Faith Dooley also chipped in 11 for the Fighting Hawks.
UND had its 11-match winning streak snapped with the loss, its first loss since Oct. 21 (3-2 at Idaho State).
Minnesota jumped out to a 7-3 lead and held a 14-8 advantage before a huge Faith Dooley kill sparked a 7-0 UND run for North Dakota's first lead. Teo Tepavac followed Dooley's kill with back-to-back service aces and had three in the run as the visitors had the top-ranked team on the ropes early. The score would be tied five more times in that set before the Gophers ended the frame with five of the final six points to win, 25-21.
The Gophers fueled a capacity crowd with a 10-0 start to the second frame but UND did not wilt. North Dakota got a key sideout from its lone senior Chelsea Moser as the Fighting Hawks claimed the next four points. UM built a lead as large as 22-9 before claiming a two-sets-to-none lead with a 25-12 victory. North Dakota lost junior Julia Kaczorowska to an injury in that set, but the Fighting Hawks soldiered on.
UND got a solid contribution from Grace Bettenga in her stead, battling the top-ranked (AVCA poll) Gophers neck-and-neck in the third. North Dakota led 3-2 before a quick 5-0 spurt by the home team. UND battled to make it 10-10, however, a 6-2 Minnesota stretch put the Gophers in front for good. UM claimed it 33rd consecutive home win with a 25-20 third-set victory to advance to Saturday's second round.
